Abortion, Yes Or No? Legalized Murder? Acceptable Alternative? What Is Your View? Chime In!

In today's post, I want to talk about the controversial topic of abortion. I know many of you might be saying that as a Christian company your stance is clear.

Yes it is. Cloud Ten Pictures (and your blogger) are both against abortion, make no mistake about it.

However, some of the folks who read our blog think abortion is acceptable.

While still others feel that abortion is wrong in most cases except a few.

What are your thoughts?

I'd really like to hear some good commentary.

So first, let us know your position on the issue of abortion and then back it up as to why you take that position.

SAVING GOD Starring Ving Rhames Gets Yet Another Good Nod

Recently, I've been doing quite a bit of traveling. I write this as I sit at the DFW airport in Dallas, after a canceled return flight home. Who knows how long I'll be here, but if you don't see a blog post on Monday, please someone bring some food and a pillow to gate A34. I would be most appreciative.

While traveling this time around, I got to spend time with some local filmmakers, along with some who were passing through like myself.

Meetings with filmmakers are always quite interesting because we are all our own worst critics. So when you hear a "praise" from a fellow filmmaker who knows his craft, it is always a blessing.

One of the filmmakers that I had a chance to meet with last night had nothing but praise reports about our latest feature film production SAVING GOD, starring Ving Rhames. I'm honestly delighted to receive that sort of information from such a talented filmmaker.

Cloud Ten, SAVING GOD and LEFT BEHIND are on the hood of this amazing machine

Bet you didn't know that Cloud Ten Pictures / Cloud Ten Entertainment has its own race car??

Ok, well we really don't have our OWN racing car... at least not yet.

But we do have a great friend of Cloud Ten Pictures named Clint Thomas who does.

R12 Revolution Racing is a very very fast ministry! Get in, sit down, shut up and hang on!

Clint is a strong Christian who loves speed, Cloud Ten Pictures, and Christ... not necessarily in that order of course.

Flashback To The Eighties - Win A Free Movie Starring Mr. T

So for today's blog post, I just decided to have some fun.

You remember the Eighties.. well the Eighties wouldn't be the Eighties without big hair, Rubik's cubes, breakdancing, Nintendo, and - of course - Mr. T.

I remember growing up as a kid in the Eighties myself, watching countless episodes of THE A TEAM with Mr. T starring as B.A. Baracus.

The signature mohawk, gold chains, and tough exterior were all part of who he was on the outside. But who is Mr. T?

Let's find out...

Laurence Tero Tureaud a.k.a. Mr. T

His real name is Laurence Tero Tureaud, and he is the youngest of twelve children. He grew up the son of a minister in the Robert Taylor Homes projects in Chicago, Illinois.

Mr. T was a bodyguard for some famous folks like the one above

He joined the Army and became an MP. He returned from the Army and used his skills to land a job as a bodyguard for some fairly well known folks including: Muhammad Ali, Michael Jackson, Steve McQueen, Leon Spinks, Joe Frazier and Diana Ross.

Of course he has an extensive list of films and television credits that can be seen HERE

But something you may not know is that Mr. T is a self-proclaimed born again Christian and that he truly has a heart of gold.

Mr. T has spent quite a bit of his time, talent and treasure working on projects that are aimed at keeping kids on the right track.

In 1984, he made a motivational video in which he talks to kids about appreciating their origins, handling peer pressure and controlling anger.

He also released an album called Mr. T's Commandments in which he encourages kids to stay in school and away from drugs.

In addition, Mr. T has a humanitarian heart. He has donated quite a bit of money and clothing to the Hurricane Katrina victims.

At Cloud Ten Pictures we are both blessed and pleased to have Mr. T as one of our movie stars. He stars in our feature length film JUDGMENT and if you haven't seen it, I encourage you to watch the trailer for this film and to consider picking it up for your personal library.

Preparations Are Being Made For The Third Temple in Jerusalem, Prophecy Coming True

Preps are being made for the Third Temple to be built.

The other day I was working on my Facebook as I normally do, and I ran across a post that a friend had put out about the preps being made for the building of the Third Temple.

Of course, for those interested in Biblical prophecy, and most Cloud Ten Pictures fans are, this is of great interest.

I also thought it interesting to note that as of earlier this year, all the furniture for the Temple has already been made, and all the priestly garments as well. The building of the Temple and its completion will signify an important milestone in Prophecy.

Time is short.

According to Scripture, the building of the Third Temple signifies the remaining portions of end times prophecies will follow at a rapid rate.

The coming of the Messiah, JESUS CHRIST could be sooner than most might expect…but first… the anti-Christ will be revealed....

The abomination of desolation is when the Antichrist stands in the holy place of the rebuilt Temple and falsely declares to the world that he is God.

THE RIVER WITHIN is a fantastic film that deals with several important topics.

One of those topics is PURPOSE. What is your purpose? What is the purpose of the church?

Another topic that it deals with is TRANSPARENCY IN RELATIONSHIPS. What is your relationship with your loved ones really like? When no one else but family is around, what is your family like? What are your relationships like? Do people who see you, really see you? Or do they see what you want them to see?

The film also deals with a topic that has not had much "press" but needs to be discussed. CUTTING. Yes, both Christians and non-Christians cut themselves and this all too often participated in, and rarely if ever discussed topic is met head-on in the film. Often hand in hand with cutting is depression, this all too important topic is also covered.

THE RIVER WITHIN is truly a fantastic film that deals with so much. I really encourage you to pick this one up on November 10th.

Zac Heath, the man behind THE RIVER WITHIN shares a few thoughts with us:

It's so great to finally be at this point with THE RIVER WITHIN. I started out to write a script with a message that represented my faith that I could shoot with some friends in the summer. But, as usual , God had more elaborate plans, as it evolved into a full-time job between pre-production, filming, editing, and marketing.

The story, about a law-school grad who returns to the small town he grew up in to study for the bar, is fictional. But I borrowed a great deal from my own experiences in writing it. Like the main character, I grew up in a small town in the south, and I also worked as a youth pastor for a while. Many of the characters in the movie are an amalgamation of many personality types I've come across on my own journey, though none of them are representation of any one person I've known.

The story of Marcus was one that I felt needed to be told. Cutting and self-mutilation is a very real part of teenage culture today and something that youth pastors all across the country are encountering. It is not confined to cities or poorer areas, it is prevalent in suburbs and very affluent homes. But it remains something that many people are still unaware exists. In the movie, I tried to address it in a very real, thoughtful and caring manner. And the actor who played Marcus, Maurice Mejia, really dove into the role, doing a great deal of research on depression and even physically becoming the character by losing weight and growing out his hair.

I'm very excited to be working with Cloud Ten Pictures on the release of THE RIVER WITHIN. Andre van Heerden has been a great support from early on. I was sitting at my computer one day a few months ago, when I received a call from Andre out of the blue. Apparently somebody who saw a screening of the movie and liked it, passed the word on to him, so I sent him a screener. I'm glad they did, as my experience with Cloud Ten has been a very good one. They have all been very professional and on top of things.

I'm also excited to be working with Cloud Ten because 9 years ago, as I was an actor about to enter Seminary, I realy wanted to be a part of the LEFT BEHIND movie and work on it in some fashion. But I was under contract at the time, and couldn't even consider pursuing it. It's almost as if my prayers from then have been answered, just not in the manner I had expected.

THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH - Free Film Opportunity!

The concept of a rapture of the church is a controversial topic among Christians around the world.

The rapture of the saints is in keeping with the pre-tribulation viewpoint of the end times.

The word "rapture" itself is not found in Scripture, but the concept itself is found within the pages of 1 Thessalonians 4. It is found in the Apostle Paul's writing in verse 17.

The words which are translated into English as "caught up" is translated from the Greek word harpazo which literally means to carry away, carry off, snatch up or grasp in a hastened manner.

So how did we go from harpazo to rapture? Well the answer lies in the Latin translation. When the Scriptures were translated into Latin, the Greek word harpazo became the Latin word raptus.

English scholars used the term rapture to describe this "snatching up" as a raptor takes it's prey. This is conveyed in verse 17. English speaking theologians then took the term "rapture" to describe this "carrying away" of the saints.

In accordance with this viewpoint, the rapture is a real time event that will take place in the near future. Jesus will return in the air and snatch up His church from the Earth then return to Heaven with His bride.

Facebook The Online Community Of The Globe - Cloud Ten's Presence

Facebook, the online community of the globe, was founded by Mark Zuckerburg and his college roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes while they were students at Harvard. The website's membership was originally limited to students of Harvard, but was later expanded to other colleges. Eventually, high schoolers and then anyone over the age of 13 was allowed to participate.

Recently, according to Alexa, Facebook passed Yahoo as the #2 site on the internet - just behind King Google.

Cloud Ten Pictures recognizes the power behind this global online community and has established a growing presence on Facebook. Each of our Facebook pages has its own unique draw.

The medium of film cannot be underestimated in its ability to reach countless individuals on a global scale, regardless of their language or cultural background.

An encounter with a beautiful film is an encounter with a work of art, a means of catharsis, and a moment in which we can enter a story bigger than ourselves - not our own, but somehow familiar.

Cloud Ten Pictures - DANGEROUS CALLING

In a recent post, I talked about the controversy of the Christian suspense / horror / thriller genres of films.

It is my thought that we should not surrender these powerful genres of film to the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Eph 6:12), but we should use them to fulfill our God-given assignment to be ambassadors of Christ (2 Cor 5:20).

There are many people out there who thrive off of a "clean and wholesome" Christian film that holds no controversy and promotes the Gospel. Statistically speaking, most of these people are Christians.

There are also many people out there who would never watch such a "clean" movie because it doesn't meet them where they are. Statistically speaking, most of these people are non-Christians.

So much time is spent telling people about the Second Coming of Christ, and while this is important and a focus of many our films at Cloud Ten, we must always keep in mind that many people haven't heard that He came the FIRST time!

We'd like to hear your thoughts on the role of films that appeal more to non-Christians than they do Christians.

We aren't talking about horror films only, how about any film that would tend to appeal to non-Christians, that has a message of grace, forgiveness, hope and love?

CUTTING, DEPRESSION, PURPOSE - A Powerful Film That Deals With Some Taboo Issues - NOW AVAILABLE

Isn't it great when you find a great film that actually has a message?

I know personally, whenever I find one, I recommend them to friends and relatives.

Well this last summer, that is exactly what happened with Cloud Ten Pictures THE RIVER WITHIN.

This great film about purpose, deals with some very difficult issues that are normally "taboo" to discuss in an open forum.

Among other things, THE RIVER WITHIN deals with two issues that are rampant among the youth culture today:

Self-mutilation (cutting)

Depression

We just finished our limited theatrical run of THE RIVER WITHIN. The movie was in 9 theaters.

In the first four theaters, this film came in at #1! Keep in mind we were competing with the Hollywood blockbusters!

In the last 5 theaters we came in somewhere in the middle of the pack which is still great because in these theaters the numbers of attendance grew throughout the time it was there.

This means that people were going to see it, and then telling their loved ones, friends and co-workers about it.

Word of mouth really propelled the film and we are so grateful to you for getting behind this movie! You all did an amazing job spreading the word!

We just finished the final mix on SHADOW GOVERNMENT. The film has been edited, color-corrected, scored and now finally mixed. Tons of work went into this one.

Originally, the documentary was supposed to be 60 minutes in length. But it quickly became apparent to writer/director Andre van Heerden after his initial paper edit came in well over 2 hours that we had far too much good material.

Andre chided that he thought the interviewees were "conspiring" to give him too much good material.

So in the final edit we ended up with 90 minutes of documentary goodness.

Controversy Over Christian Horror Films - Chime In!

Recently, a Facebook friend of mine who is a filmmaker, posted something that was a great topic of controversial discussion regarding our latest film DANGEROUS CALLING.

Why was it so controversial? Because DANGEROUS CALLING is a Christian Horror film.

QUESTION: Is the Christian Horror / Thriller / Suspense genre a good genre for Christian filmmakers to be involved in? Can it be used for the Kingdom of Christ? Or is it a tool of the enemy?

Below are two opposing positions on the topic. One is my friends, and the other is mine. I'd ask that you read them both in their entirety and then provide your own input and thoughts by leaving a comment on this blog post. Let us hear your voice!

To protect my friend's identity, and respect his position, I won't name him, but are some excerpts of his original comment that conveys his thoughts:

What I am about to say will be shocking particularly because it is coming from me, a Christian who also happens to be a filmmaker. I had been hearing a lot of "promo" stuff about a new independent Christian film that to my surprise was picked up by Cloud Ten Pictures, and well, I did take a quick look at it.

Looking at the DVD cover for the film caught my attention right away. Two words entered my mind and they were "fear" and "evil."

If you'd like to take a look at the trailer you can feel free to, but do so carefully. It's creepy and disturbing.

It's being marketed as a Christian thriller. This in itself is very disturbing. Occult films are on the rise and thrillers as a genre are far too close to horror. Prior to my life as a Christian, I struggled far too much in this area. I had a regular diet of horror. The sex, nudity, drugs, profanity, lack of hope in Jesus was enough and all the enemy needed to get a firm hold on me.

I'm not saying this film is occult per se but it is far too close to occult, and we should be very very careful. Movies like this need to be approached with caution.

The problem I'm having is not the film itself, but the dangerous territory we move into when we think it is okay to dabble in thrillers. Once people, and even the Christian community, get comfortable with it, then it's horror. Once this happens Satan has won, he has successfully found a way into our hearts once again.

It's important that people understand clearly what I'm saying. I'm not saying that this film will corrupt everyone's mind. It most certainly will not. For me personally, it would encourage evil. It would make me believe that it is okay to do horror films.

The point I want to illustrate is one thing leads to another and then another and it snowballs into something big. Before we know it, Christian Horrors will be on our doorstep. We don't need this kind of programming in our brains and hearts. Again it is important to emphasize that the problem I'm having with DANGEROUS CALLING is the potential of what it could encourage. It is too close to the occult.

A film like this would encourage negative thought patterns, paranoia and fear. These are the tools of Satan to rob us of our God given joy.

When it comes down to it, we all must make our own decisions and choices about what we watch. What affects one person doesn't necessarily affect another. I know how a film like this would affect me.

The youth culture will undoubtedly praise this film. I cannot. I just hope God breathes wisdom in our heart before it is too late.

Now I responded to my friend by saying this:

While I respect your position, I must agree to disagree with you agreeably.

The question that is raised is, "Can this genre of film be used to the advantage of the filmmaker who seeks to glorify Christ through film?

This is a question that various camps disagree on. Some of the more far right, arch conservative groups say NO! Absolutely not! While others are more like the Apostle Paul who when faced with multiple graven idolatrous images of false gods on Mars Hill, used the "Unknown god" to his advantage, to share the Christ with an audience who otherwise might not have listened.

Although I'm pretty far "right" myself, I am personally in the latter camp. I believe that, as believers, we should be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" Matthew 10:16.

I believe that like Paul, we should use everything in the world around us to bring about the knowledge regarding Christ and His marvelous gospel of grace to a world that so desperately needs to hear it.

Some folks who would never watch a typical Christian movie, will watch a film like DANGEROUS CALLING or THE FAMILIAR. I personally believe that we need to stop preaching to the choir with our films and use the "unknown god" of filmmaking to our advantage to reach the lost world for Christ.

So there you have it folks. Some opposing views on a very controversial subject.

THE END TIMES - Mark Of The Beast - 666

The Book of Revelation is a topic of great discussion. In context, according to Scripture, it is the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave Him to show to His servants the things that must soon take place.

God made it known (to man) by sending His angel to His servant John.

The Apostle John, inspired by the Holy Spirit, writes:

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

And the time is near folks. We should be talking about this at great length with one another.

So let's talk about what the Book of Revelation says about the "last days" Commonly referred to as the "end times" or in theological terms as "Eschatology," the study of the "last things."

In the Book of Revelation Chapter 13 verses 11 and following, the Apostle John is witnessing to a second beast that causes the earth and its inhabitants to worship the first beast discussed at the beginning of the same chapter.

THE MARK OF THE BEAST - 666

This second beast is the one that: causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding caluculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.

Then there is a stern warning in Scripture found in the Book of Revelation chapter 14 verses 9-11:

And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of His anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.

What is this mark? What does it look like? Will you know it when you see it?

Really loved Treasure Blind. Genuine Indie movie. The story worked very well on so many levels. I didn't realize the Church basis of the project till the extras. Paul Lalonde - The Man At Cloud Ten Pictures

Every company out there has it's figurehead. And while there are many people who make up the Cloud Ten Pictures team, one stands above the rest...

Allow me to introduce you to my friend and boss.. the owner and chairman of Cloud Ten Pictures... Mr. Paul Lalonde.

Paul is a visionary with a wacky sense of humor and a huge heart.

What would Paul say about Cloud Ten? He would tell you that we are a very progressive, edgy and cool company with a desire to impact the world for Christ through film. He would also readily tell you that we are always on the lookout for new projects and talent.

What can I tell you about him? Well, there is much I can tell you. First off, he is a servant of the Christ and a family man. He has been married for over two decades and has two children, a dog named Cozmo, and 4 cats.

Paul is also a HUGE hockey fan. Yes, he grows a playoff beard every season that his team is in the playoffs.

Any youth pastor can tell you, this is not always an easy group to reach in terms of entertainment. In fact, you don't have to be a youth pastor or a teacher to appreciate that challenge - just ask any parent! ... With so many things going on at Cloud Ten Pictures, it is honestly tough to keep everyone informed of all the things taking place.

Have you heard of the KINGDOMWOOD Christian Film Festival (KCFF)? If you haven't you should really take note!

This is their second year running the festival and what a festival it looks to be!

Here is the scoop: The KCFF is October 1st - 3rd, 2009 near Atlanta, GA. It is a 3-day faith-based film festival whose mission is to provide a forum for independent filmmakers to screen films that promote and inspire Christian teaching and values.

The festival will screen full features, shorts and documentaries as well as provide workshops and symposiums that will offer insight and analysis of industry trends in faith-based filmmaking and production.

KCFF seeks to create an environment of trust and receptiveness for families and individuals searching for films that speak to their inner spiritual voice, while providing a platform for filmmakers wishing to express their spiritual vision on film.

Ultimately they seek to: "Reach - Teach - Inspire, The Next Generation"

There are many great films, shorts and documentaries that will be playing at KCFF this year. Among them are some that I have personally enjoyed or been blessed by including the documentary THE HEART OF TEXAS, and the feature film FIND ME.

But of course I have to beam when I tell you that Cloud Ten Pictures film WATERPROOF starring Burt Reynolds will be showing as the closing feature at the festival on Saturday night.

The Story Behind WATERPROOF

As a kid growing up in a Jewish family in the suburbs of 1960s Washington, D.C., writer/director Barry Berman never understood why he was instructed to lock the car doors whenever they drove into the city.

"There was this animosity, or a difficulty between blacks and Jews that I didn't understand as a kid. It didn't make any sense to me. As I grew up, I understood why it made sense to others, or why others had made it make sense in their head, but to me, it still made no sense." -Barry Berman

It was this observation that planted the seed for the drama WATERPROOF. The idea began with the premise of putting an African American and a man of Jewish faith together, assuming they both were good people, both had their individual problems, and both were ultimately reliant on one another for a better life in some way.

Berman took this premise and created his central characters: Eli Zeal (a lonely and bitter elderly Jewish shopkeeper played by Burt Reynolds) and Tyree Battle (a hardened single black mother who drives a cab in Washington, D.C., played by April Grace).

I don't really have a favorite track, because they were all written from a very personal and heartfelt space. If I did have to pick one, it would be WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE featuring national recording artist Dave Hollister.

Dave and I talked prior to writing that song and we were both in a place where we felt like.. "what now God?" I feel that the song captured the moment.

But through the journey, Armstrong must deal with his own past history of violence and crime and make sure that he, himself doesn't fall.

After countless hours of planning and over a hundred hours of work and design time, Cloud Ten Pictures has officially launched our new website!

I have to tell you that this has been a long time in the planning, and to see it online is really something special. Earlier this year, I met with Paul Lalonde, Andre van Heerden and Michael Walker at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. One of the things we spent a significant amount of time discussing was the website.

Michael (Vice President, Marketing and Operations for Cloud Ten Pictures) spearheaded this effort and his trusty right hand Charlie Montney (Cloud Ten Pictures' Webmaster) was at the helm.

Every now and again the other Execs at Cloud Ten Pictures provide me some good "insider" info for my blog.

Today I was blessed to receive some really interesting news from Michael Walker Cloud Ten's Vice President, Marketing and Operations.

Here is the scoop that Michael shared with me:

Eric and Cloud Ten blog readers: The River Within a film distributed by Cloud Ten Pictures is picking up momentum. It may well be the surprise movie of the year!

Here at the Cloud Ten Production Office, we are receiving requests almost daily to screen the movie in churches all across America.

We are even getting requests to screen the movie in theaters. A number of theaters will be showing the movie in the coming weeks so check out www.theriverwithinmovie.com to learn where you can see this great movie on the big screen.

In October, your church community can enjoy The River Within right in the comfort of your own church. A movie event is a great way to reach out to your community and invite a friend to come to church or to raise funds for that special project in your church or community.

How YOUR IDEA Makes it to the BIG SCREEN - Part 2

Note: Because of the length of this topic, it will be covered over a series of blog entries. This is Part 2 in the series.

In my last blog entry, I gave the nickel version of what it takes to get your movie idea from your head into a script form that producers will be willing to take a look at.

Ok Eric, so now I have my script, I'm $60K in the hole (or I've sold one of my kidneys)... what do I do now? What is the next step in getting my idea to the big screen?

LOGLINE, SYNOPSIS and ATTACHMENTS: Most professional production companies will NOT take a look at an unsolicited script. But since we aren't tracking you down and you have the BEST idea on the entire planet, how do you get your script into our hands for review?

Answer: You send the production company the logline for your script and a 1-2 page synopsis of your script, with attachments.

Now your logline SHOULD have been written before your script was written! I should have mentioned this in Part 1, but I assumed that writers know that they need to know the basic premise of their story before they start writing. Anyway, if you haven't created your logline by this time, you need to now.

I cannot stress the importance of this step enough! The main problem with many logline and synopsis submissions lies in the fact that many indie filmmakers wouldn't know a logline if it bit 'em in the backside, and their synopses don't contain the information that production companies are looking for.

1. LOGLINE: A logline is a ONE to TWO sentence answer to the question, "What is your script about?" This is the SAME line/s that you will "quick pitch" to studio execs, donors, investors, distributors and basically anyone willing to listen. So ya think ya might want to take some time to understand this step right? Well, you do! Trust me, this is HUGE! So take the time to check out this fantastic article on loglines by my friend and gifted screenwriter/script doctor, Mr. C.J. Powers.

Bottom line on your loglines is to make sure that it tells the story, and sets up the irony of the story concisely, in two sentences or less. 3+ sentence loglines are outside industry parameters. Don't use them.

2. SYNOPSIS: A synopsis is a 1-2 page document that gives the abbreviated version of your script and contains any attachments that you have to the script.

The synopsis of your script should tell the entire story. Don't be concerned about giving away the twists or resolution. This is the ONLY document that production companies are going to take the time to look at, before deciding whether or not to request your script.

Please, please, please... did I say please? CHECK YOUR GRAMMAR, SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION! I can't tell you how many times I see a horribly written synopsis. What makes a writer think that a production company is going to look at a 100-120 page script if 2 cohesive pages can't be written properly? Note: Do NOT create a 3+ page synopsis. You will immediately lose credibility with the production company.

3. ATTACHMENTS: Attachments are actually part of your 1-2 page synopsis and should be included in that document. Attachments can include a myriad of things.

Do me a favor that will bless you. Think like a producer for a moment. Producers are not only concerned with the overall quality of the production, but the financial feasibility of the production as well! We are concerned with costs, talent, locations, tax incentives, investors, etc.

An attachment can be all of the above and more. Say your film takes place on a golf course and you have a friend who runs a PGA golf course and believes in your film. This person has confirmed in writing that, if you produce your script into a film, he/she will let you film on the course for nothing more than a credit in the film, and the publicity that it will give the course. THIS is an example of an attachment. You think the production company might be interested in knowing that the location for the bulk of the shoot is already attached at no cost? You bet they want to know this information!

When Cloud Ten Pictures was approached with the idea for our latest production SAVING GOD, we found that noted actor Ving Rhames was already "attached" to the script. You think this caught our attention? You bet it did!

How YOUR IDEA Makes it to the BIG SCREEN - Part 1

In response to my blog readers (a.k.a one of my comments from yesterday), today I'm blogging about the process required to get YOUR IDEA to the BIG SCREEN.

Note: Because of the length of this topic, it will be covered over a series of blog entries.

I hope that practical articles like this will be a blessing to you and - more importantly - to the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that so desperately needs to hear it!

Ok.. so I have this idea (or I've run across a story, idea, pitch, etc.) that I think would make a great film. What now?

1. Pray. You are about to embark on an endeavor that will test you, frustrate you, and hopefully bring about the fulfillment that only God can bring. Make sure you aren't just coming up with an idea. Remember: ministry is RECEIVED, not ACHIEVED. God does the work... we simply receive it and join Him in what He is already doing. (Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now... but really this is where it begins for us as followers of the King of Kings.)

2. Option the story. If you are the idea person or writer, obviously you can skip this and go to Step 3. If not, you need to option the story from the writer or person who had the idea. Basically, this means that the originator gives you the rights to his/her story for "x" years. If you don't make the film before this predetermined period of time expires, then the rights go back to the originator. This agreement obviously involves some measure of negotiation and compensation with the person you are optioning the idea from, although there are many ways this compensation can come about. Many idea originators just want to get the story they are so passionate about out there.

3. Find a screenwriter. Obviously if you are a screenwriter, then you can just get to work. If you aren't, then you need to find someone who will write the script for you. Depending on how serious you are, you should seek out a quality writer who is comfortable and familiar writing in the genre that the idea falls in.

(Note: Professional Guild writers often receive $60,000.00 for a feature length script + up to $15,000.00 more in fringe payments, back-end payments, etc.)

But if your idea is a solid one, which I hope it is.. this is your first hurdle. You might need to seek funding at this point from people who believe in the project. Find the niche market appeal of your work and approach individuals who have a passion for investing in this type of work. As a general rule, the fewer investors in a single project, the better.

4. Now you have a script. It should be written, revised and re-written at least 10-12 times before it gets to you. It should be the proper length. One page of script normally equals about 1 minute of screen time. Feature length scripts should be 100-120 pages in length, with very few exceptions. Anything over 120 pages rarely gets taken seriously. There are a few Schindler's List's out there... but your script is probably NOT one of them.

Also, keep in mind that writers are creative people and - as such - they don't always write with a production budget in mind. Locations, blowing up cars, stunts, and pyrotechnics can get VERY COSTLY. Generally, the fewer locations, the better.

MOST IMPORTANTLY IS STORY, STORY, STORY! If you don't have a STORY with appropriate plot lines, sequences, progression, etc., SCRAP IT even if you love it.. before you mortgage your house and sell a kidney.

Currently, Cloud Ten Pictures CEO, Mr. Andre van Heerden is working with author, Darek Isaacs on the development of this documentary for Cloud Ten Pictures.

The DRAGON THEATER at the Answers in Genesis Creation Museum

As part of our due diligence and research, Andre recently traveled to Cincinnati, OH to visit the Answers in Genesis Creation Museum. Here are some words from Andre from his recent trip:

We had arranged interviews with leading scientists and researchers on the topic of "Dragons" and the myths and facts surrounding them. I was expecting some very devout and intelligent people with a large warehouse full of dinosaur bones.

What I found was a first rate, interactive, visually-stunning and entertaining museum that can rival any museum in the world.

First impressions do NOT disappoint! The grounds that the museum is located on are gorgeous. Beautiful gates, parking area, large dinosaur status, well-designed main building all sitting on beautifully manicured gardens and complete with a Shelby Cobra sitting right by the front doors! (The car was donated by a supporter of the museum and will be used for auction to raise funds for the ministry.)

The ticket area is decorated by rock strata dozens of feet high and a replica of a giant flying reptile hanging over top. Turning the corner, you're confronted by a 20 foot cast of a Wolly Mammoth skeleton, animatronic dinosaurs and various entrances to a cine-sphere, a state-of-the-art theater (with shaking seats!), a trip through history tour, three different restaurants and a world-class book store and learning center. All of this done at the level of Disney World and other leading public attractions, I had to keep reminding myself that I was there to do interviews and not just take all this in!

Once in the interview though with Dr. David Menton, Dr. Andrew Snelling and the founder of Answers in Genesis, Ken Ham, all that I had seen at the museum was reinforced by their facts, research, and years of diligent study. Thinking back on the experience I was reminded of one of my favorite Bible verses: "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might" (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

The group at AiG needs to be congratulated on being a great example of putting forth excellence to honor our Creator. I can't wait to review the interviews and put the documentary all together!

So word on the street is that Cloud Ten Pictures is doing some pretty "super" cutting edge stuff. And I'm blessed to tell you it's true.

What are we up to right now?

From the production side of the house:

We currently have 5 films in development. We are in talks with some great actors.. and no I won't name them yet. But stay tuned for that. Still closing funding on some of these, so if you are interested in investing in a Cloud Ten Pictures film, let me know.

From the music side of the house:

We've picked up rap artist F1 Diamond "Pastor of the Traphouse" and are featuring the beautiful songstress Erica Lane.

So I went out with my oldest son Darius yesterday. Just the two of us. God had been putting it on my heart to share some special time with him. I made it a point not to do any work while I was with him.

God just touched me today in my quiet time. I couldn't help but think of my son. He doesn't read my blog so this won't embarrass him, and it has nothing to do with Cloud Ten Pictures. But it does have to do with your blogger.

Albuquerque Film Festival and F1 Diamond Shout Out

Today I met with the folks who are running the first ever Albuquerque Film Festival. My heart is always to help indie filmmakers learn their craft and at the same time hone my own.

This is how it went down: I called the Albuquerque Film Festival main number at 11pm last night and, like most creative types, the Festival Director was still up and working, as was I. He told me that he was glad I called and asked me to stop by the next day (today).

So I did. Today I gave Rich Heinrich, the Festival Director, a copy of our film SAVING GOD starring Ving Rhames and Dean McDermott. Then Brittany and I hung out with Brett Kingsbury for awhile and shared with him some ideas for marketing and publicizing the festival.

They were so encouraged by our offer to help get the word out that they provided me with some all-access passes to the festival in return.

Feeling blessed I took it to the next level. I met with Alex and Christina, who have the cutest little son, 4 year old Dante (sp?).

Alex is a musician and web designer. He is actually the one who designed the Albuquerque Film Festival website, which you can see HERE. Alex did an amazing job putting up a much-needed site, and he did it in two days!

Not only that, but a couple of Alex's friends submitted to the festival. Their films are Neshoba (about Mississippi Burning) and Visual Acoustics (Architectural Photography of Julius Shulman). Incidentally, Alex designed Neshoba's website.

Later, I met with Alex and Brittany and we discussed a practical plan of action to get the word out about the festival. We talked about optimizing their site and general marketing ideas. It was a good time and I think we will all be blessed in this partnership.

But the coolest thing happened. While we were meeting, F1 Diamond one of our Cloud Ten artists, called me up on Skype.

Time to Take a Stand - Andre van Heerden

For those of you who follow my blog, you know that from time to time, rather than post my own thoughts, I share the thoughts of some of the other Execs at Cloud Ten Pictures. I believe that it is important that you get to know us all - that you get to know our hearts and our vision.

Today's post will likely offend some. I want you to know that I'm ok with that. Folks around the globe are polarized on the issue discussed today. Even folks within the Christian church are sometimes at odds on this issue.

Make no mistake about it, Cloud Ten Pictures CEO Andre van Heerden takes a very specific and strong stance. So without further ado, here are some thoughts from the boss:

Time to Take a Stand - The World Has Certainly Changed

For me, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Hard to believe, but THAT's a statement that can earn you the media's scorn and give others the right to say absolutely horrible things about you. And anyone who defends you or your statement is branded a hate-monger or back-water rube.

Recently President Obama gave an 18 minute speech supporting gay and lesbians and promised to support their causes. He went on to characterize those who opposed homosexual political issues as holding fast to "worn arguments and old attitudes."

Wow.

Does ANYONE remember that the United States was FOUNDED on Christian principles? Is there any argument that the United States became the most affluent, free and powerful nation on earth while adhering to those very principles?

The very people who are now screaming the loudest about their rights are the same people who are trampling all over everyone else's. Having an opinion about what is sin doesn't make you a hate-monger or old-fashioned or foolish. It means you have a belief system (like EVERYONE else).

And isn't it strange that all the unchecked rhetoric and vitriol is only aimed at Christianity? Last I checked the Muslim faith has FAR harsher things to say about what is right and wrong and the suitable punishments for such acts.

The pendulum has swung way too far and unfortunately most Christian groups and churches are failing to engage the culture and take a stand. If no one, in love, stands up and says something, no one will know how far off the track we've actually gone. I feel blessed to be part of a company that through entertainment tries to add some balance to the equation.

When God united Adam and Eve, He instituted a union between man and woman. According to the Scripture (Leviticus 20:13), homosexuality is detestable to God.

A little glimpse into my personal life...

Many of you know that I'm constantly busy in my position as the Executive Public Relations Consultant for Cloud Ten Pictures. Yes, I have a very cool job and get to travel and meet fascinating people, and sometimes I'm even used of God to help make people's dreams a reality.

Besides all that I do at Cloud Ten Pictures, I'm also the President and CEO of HOSFU LC aka Christian-Movie.com; a company that exists to "Promote Christ Through The Film Industry"

But beyond all that and most importantly (second only to my relationship with Christ) I do have a family...

Because I traveled so much during the month of July, my family went to South Dakota for the month. The past three days have been pretty rough for them.

They left Friday from South Dakota and were supposed to be here on Saturday. Well, my 8 year old (Javen) got sick on the way to Denver, their scheduled stop, and they ended up staying in Denver on Saturday. Then my wife (Marie) got sick, followed by my 12 year old (Darius) then my 5 year old (Silas). So they stayed Sunday in Denver as well. It wasn't a pretty picture and poor Marie had to do it all by herself. I felt horrible and spent a lot of time in prayer for them. It seemed like the only one who escaped Montezuma's Revenge was my 10 year old daughter (Arianna).

I wanted to thank all of my friends who know me that have been praying for my family that has been sick. You guys bless me. But late last night, my family finally made it home. It was such a delight to see their faces and hold them close.

They are still recovering and now I might get sick.. but that is ok. I'll gladly deal with that just to have them home.

Part of our family is Brittany Hardy. Many of you know her as the Executive Project Manager for HOSFU LC, or my assistant. But truth be told, she is family to us and we are incredibly blessed to have her.

And lastly even though I have 3 cats (Jasper Head Jenkins, Alibi and Accomplice) 2 guinea pigs (Hope and Peace), and a fish (Dakota)... my personal pet is a bearded dragon named Trogdor the Burninator. He is a sandfire bearded dragon... Check out all his majesty..

Cloud Ten at the National Worship Leaders Conference

Earlier this week, I was at the National Worship Leader Conference in Kansas City, KS. The conference was put on by Worship Leader Magazine and held at The Church of the Resurrection, in Overland Park.

The place was jam packed full of amazing and talented people from all over the country, and a few from beyond our borders as well.

Honestly, there wasn't enough time in my days to meet with everyone I would have liked to have met with. But I will share a few of the names and faces for you:

Brian Steckler of thestickhouse.com

First, I met with Brian Steckler. Brian is a composer, musician, etc. who had some success with the "boy bands" during their season. Then God called him to build his own studio, which he did. He now composes scores and songs, and helps artists to develop their gifts. I really liked Brian - he seemed very casual and had a humble confidence about him. You can check out his website here.

Tony Guerrero Creative Arts Director for Saddleback Church and Owner of Shadowworks Productions

Then I met with Tony Guerrero. Tony is the Creative Arts Director for the well-known Saddleback Church (Pastor Rick Warren). What I didn't know is that Tony is an extremely gifted jazz musician in his own right. He also has a company called Shadow Works Productions, with his business partner and collaborator, Ms. Shawn King. They put together a live show called The Journey which they want to have animated, in a sort of Lion King style. I've seen The Journey, and it has great potential for the right animator. It will be interesting to watch what happens there.

I also met some really cool guys at a smaller local gathering. These guys all have their own gig, but they are also bloggers and social media types who have the ear of the online Christian community. I also had the opportunity to meet with Anita Cordell, a gifted Christian actress from the Kansas City area. Had some great KC BBQ with her and got to know her heart. Got to meet with John Eschenbaum (Producer) and Steve Gray (Host) from The Steve and Kathy Show. They have a great concept for a show and have won many awards. They are ready to take their show to the next level, and that is already in the works. They had a very friendly crew and took great care to show me all that they were passionate about while I was there. I look forward to seeing what God will do with them in their next phase of production!

Lastly, I took some time to meet with @shellykramer and @laura_lake who are internet mavens and twitteriffic! They totally took the time to not only get to know me, but take me to school. Appreciate you gals!

July 20, 2009. Cloud Ten Pictures Inc., the Christian film production and distribution house behind the LEFT BEHIND film series, has recently acquired the all media distribution rights to THE RIVER WITHIN,
produced and directed by Zac Heath.

Well known for its end times thrillers, such as The LEFT BEHIND and APOCALYPSE film series, Cloud Ten has recently increased its presence as a distributor of independently produced Christian films and television programs, such as THE GENIUS CLUB (Stephen Baldwin, Tom Sizemore, Tricia Helfer), TREASURE BLIND and the INSPIRED AMBITION TV series.

THE RIVER WITHIN ambitiously tackles some of life’s largest questions. Protagonist Jason returns home from law school in search of a quiet place to study for his upcoming bar exam, but is pressured into becoming a youth pastor. Suddenly his world, and his presumed place in it, are turned upside down and he finds himself haunted by the question: 'What am I doing here?' THE RIVER WITHIN explores relationships between father and son, pastor and congregant, and God and man; and broaches head-on the age-old human dilemma of discerning God’s plan for each of us.

Walter Cronkite passes away at age 92

When I was a child, I would sit on the floor of my step-dad (Carl's) home in the evenings playing with my StarWars figures and watching television with him... it was the late 70s...

Only three things ever graced Carl's television set that I can remember...

1. Sports (Football, Olympics and mostly Boxing)
2. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom (With Marlon Perkins)
3. The News (With Walter Cronkite)

Today, Walter Cronkite passed away at the age of 92.

For me.. well, Walter's death made me think of Carl.. and the countless hours I spent watching the news as a child with the only father figure I ever really knew. Rest in peace Carl.. I really miss you.

I'm sure many of you remember Walter Cronkite and his famous tag line "And that's the way it is"

Lecrae and the folks from REACH RECORDS

So this last Monday I was blessed to meet with the folks from Reach Records. First things first, I want to tell you that these guys are the REAL DEAL.

I was going to bore you with all that I did with them from a business perspective.. but I'd rather tell you about what I witnessed.

I met backstage with them in their green room before their concert in Albuquerque at Legacy Church. They are right in the middle of a huge tour called the DON'T WASTE YOUR LIFE TOUR (DWYL). You could tell they were exhausted from touring but were drawing their strength from their individual personal relationships with Christ.

Backstage hanging out with Lecrae, Sho Baraka, Ben Washer, Trip Lee, Tedashii and special guest Flame was something to behold.

As tired as the guys were from touring, they were not sleeping in the green room.. instead when no other eyes were watching.. they were having a discussion on the Old Testament Scriptures. Lecrae was right in the heat of it along with BJ from Reach Life Ministries the ministerial extension of Reach Records.

Even though these guys are at the top of the Christian Hip-Hop scene, they are not cocky nor vain; nor do they display a "better than" vibe and they definitely do not convey that attitude. Instead, hanging out backstage with them was like hanging out with old friends.

Tedashii even made it a point to tell me that they are all old friends from back in the day, and so touring with them was not like touring with a bunch of artists as much as it was a road trip with friends.

Lecrae - A man of passion and integrity. He was very cordial and approachable. He truly loves the Lord and his heart is completely in the right place... this was evidenced by the amount of time he involved himself in all of the theological discussions that were taking place backstage. I really liked him and can see why he has climbed to the top. He gives all credit to God and I believe he truly means it.

Ben Washer - co-owner of Reach Records

Ben Washer - They call him the brains behind REACH RECORDS, and I think he is.. although I think Sho Baraka might have a little input in there too. More on Sho in a moment. But from my short time with Ben, he strikes me as a fun loving visionary. He comes across as a very casual yet astute businessman with definite goals. His eyes managed to capture everything that was going on around him and I could almost see the hamsters running around inside his head. I'd like to get to know him more from a personal level, but both of our schedules are so ridiculously busy, I doubt we could make that happen. Anyhow.. Ben is the real deal.. and poised to continue taking the industry by storm through God's appointment. I even got him on video saying he was coming after Cloud Ten next. Said he was gonna call his film company Cloud 11. Owned.. go on wit ya self Ben.

Sho Baraka - The intellectual of the bunch. A filmmaker and storyteller by heart and background. He has definite convictions about the Christian Media industry and a varied background. Out of all of the guys, I enjoyed speaking with him the most as he really took the time to speak his heart to me about his thoughts regarding the industry. Sho is one of those guys who just has depth.. you can see it in his eyes when you speak with him.

Trip Lee of Reach Records

Trip Lee - He is something else. What energy, what stage presence! My goodness.. he loves to have fun and yet is completely sold out to Christ. He electrified the audience and the stage during the show. Recently married, Trip is a funny guy with excellent skill. He was just a joy to be around and an incredibly talented young man. When Trip Lee took the stage you knew something special was taking place.. his command of the stage and audience was clearly evident.

Flame - Prior to this last Monday, I was not too familiar with Flame.. but I am now! My understanding, is that he is on tour with Reach Records as a special guest. He was part of the Cross Movement crew. Again, another incredibly gifted addition to the Reach Records tour. Out of all of the tour members, he seemed to get the audience most involved in his performance. His rhymes were on point and crisp, and the message solid. Keep your eyes on this rapper.. and may the Lord continue to do a mighty work both in and through him.

Tedashii - I saved Tedashii for last.. I really really liked him. Very personable and real. His skills on the mic were amazing. His lyrics and the speed and clarity with which they were delivered were unparalleled on the stage that night. Backstage he was very subdued and he came across as an old friend from the moment I met him. Onstage he came out in support of the other rappers as they were doing their sets and just added so much flavor to the mix. I befriended him on Facebook and I hope to continue to get to know him.

All in all I have to say, that Reach Records put on an amazing show with the Don't Waste Your Life Tour. When you combine that many talented people who are all truly (and not just for the fans) sold out to Christ... you have something so incredible and so special that as long as they stay the course, there is no telling where God will take them.

Cloud Ten's Interest: Well, nothing formal is set by any means.. but Reach Records told me that they were interested in getting into the film industry. So I took them a copy of our latest production SAVING GOD (Ving Rhames, Dean McDermott) and showed them several clips from the film. They were impressed and showed genuine interest. So I gave them a copy of the film and my business card, and told them that if they wanted to get to know our CEO Andre van Heerden, that I would be happy to put them in touch and see where the Lord leads. We closed in prayer and the time was truly enjoyed. We'll see.. I'd personally love to see these guys in a film... I'm sure their fans would too.

I know this is an incredibly long post.. but I wanted to do them justice. God's hand is upon them.

Last thing.. if you haven't heard Reach Records "13 LETTERS" you MUST get this album. In addition, Reach Life has built a curriculum around this album which breaks down all 13 of the Apostle Paul's letters in rap form. It is incredible and the CD usually sits in my own personal cd changer in my car.

Anyway.. much love to the folks at REACH RECORDS. I was thoroughly impressed with your skill, your style and most importantly your hearts for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Chillaxin on an international scale at ICVM 2009

So after I met with Paul McCusker at Focus on the Family, I continued my journey up to Denver for the International Christian Visual Media Catalyst Conference 2009.

Gathered there were just over a hundred Christian Media professionals from all over the world.

At this conference, I was blessed to meet with folks from: South Africa, India, England, Germany, The Netherlands, China, Canada, Guatemala, Romania and more.

It was a blessing to see so many people gathered in the Name above all names for the purposes of promoting His Name through Visual Media.

This year was the very first year that Cloud Ten Pictures has been represented at ICVM and I was blessed to be the one to attend. While there, I had an opportunity to present SAVING GOD and INSPIRED AMBITION to the Conference. It was very well received and once again, we were very blessed by the positive feedback on both of these titles.

Focus on the Family and Adventures in Odyssey

Wow... so much to catch up on! (Remember, anything underlined is "hyper-linked" that means you can click on it to learn more!)

First things first.. wanted to say congrats to Dan Clark and Lisa Fink for winning our free Cloud Ten Pictures DVD contest here on my blog. Dan is out of Maine and selected THE GENIUS CLUB and Lisa is out of Oklahoma and selected TREASURE BLIND. Both great titles and Cloud Ten Pictures is blessed to be their distributor.

Ok.. now onto what has been happening. Well on July 6th, I got to meet with Paul McCusker one of the many humble brains behind Adventures in Odyssey at Focus on the Family. He is an amazingly gifted writer and a quiet visionary. You can see a listing of his work HERE.

He was just a great person to talk with and he was generous in giving me a full behind the scenes tour of Focus on the Family. I got to hang out in the foley room for Adventures in Odyssey and I even got to sit in Dr. James Dobson's chair! Here are some photos to check out!

This is where all the Adventures in Odyssey magic takes place. For those of you who have wanted to see this room that is not on the standard tour.

This room looks like a mess.. and it is. But this is the foley room for Adventures in Odyssey. For those of you not in the know.. a foley room.. is basically the sound effects room for a production.

This is Dr. James Dobson's famous chair where he does his live radio show from.

And this is me getting to sit in Dr. Dobson's chair!!!

And lastly, this is my assistant Ms. Brittany Hardy with Paul McCusker.. we ended our time together in Colorado Springs at Starbucks just outside of Focus on the Family.

I have so much to catch everyone up on... my goodness. Next blog entry, I'll talk about ICVM the International Christian Visual Media Catalyst Conference that took place the 6-9th of July.

Then in another blog entry I'll talk about my meeting with Lecrae and Ben Washer from Reach Records. I just went to their concert last night and was blessed to have a private meeting with them. Looking forward to creating that blog post as well.

Next week I'll be in Kansas City at the National Worship Leaders Conference. Lots of travel this month... So much going on!
